Requirements
• PPC processor.
• MacOS 8.0 or greater.
• QuickTime™ 3.0 or greater (or full install of QuickTime™ 4+). You can download it at http://www.apple.com/quicktime.
• 8 MB of free RAM (minimum 4 MB).
How to Use it
To display a picture
• Select the "Open Picture..." command from the "File" menu, or
• Select the "Open Picture..." menu from the contextual menu (Ctrl+click), or
• Click on the "Open" button in the main window, or
• Drag a picture file into the main window, or
• Paste a picture if there is one in the clipboard.
• Import a PICT resource from a file (see below).
When a picture is displayed
You can do the following when a picture is displayed:
• Export it in any format supported by QuickTime (File -> Save As...). With QuickTime 4, you have save in the following formats: BMP, JPEG, MacPaint, PhotoShop, PICT, PNG, QuickTime image, SGI image, TGA and TIFF. QuickTime 3 offers less choices. This feature is disabled in the unregistered version.
• Print it (File -> Print...). This feature is disabled in the unregistered version.
• Cut, Copy or Clear it (Edit menu).
• Drag it to the Finder to create a clipping (Click in the picture and drag to the Finder).
• Resize it (in the "Transform" menu).
• Move it to the trash (in the "File" menu).
• Rename the file.
Drag'n'drop
Drag'n'drop is fully supported. You can drag a picture from the Finder and drop it into the PicPops window to display it. You can also drop picture clippings. Displayed pictures can be dropped into the Finder to create a picture clipping.
Contextual menus
To display the contextual menu, Hold the "Control" key, and click the mouse. Contextual menus only work in the main window.
Changing the zoom level
The "View" menu allows you to change the zoom level of the currently displayed picture. You can select a percentage (ie 50% or100%), or one of the following options:
• Best Size: use this one to show the pictures the same way as the previous versions of PicPops. The picture will be scaled to fill the window, but will never go beyond 100%. This ensures the optimal display.
• Fill Window: the picture will be as big as possible, going beyond 100% if possible.
Please note that the displayed pictures always keep their horinzontal/vertical ratio: they will never be deformed.
Showing or hiding the toolbar
If you find the toolbar intrusive (or if you want more space to see the pics), you can hide the toolbar. Select the "Show Toolbar" command in the "View" menu, or push the [spacebar] to show or hide the toolbar.
Mouse Scrolling (new in version 2.2)
You can scroll the picture with the mouse. Hold down the 'Command' key, and click into the displayed picture. Then hold down the mouse button, and drag the mouse to scroll around.
Keyboard Shortcuts
• You can use the arrow keys to scroll the displayed picture (if possible).
• Pushing the [spacebar] will show or hide the toolbar.
The "Transform" Menu (new in version 2.3)
• "Resize": as the name suggests, this allows you to resize the displayed picture. Simply enter the new width and the new height, and click the "OK" button. Only values between 1 and 4000 are allowed (should be enough).
Importing PICT resources (new in version 2.4)
Select the "Import PICT Resource..." command from the "File" menu, the contextual menu, or click on the second button in the toolbar. This will display the standard Open File dialog box. Select a file. If the file contains at least one PICT resource, PicPops will display a dialog box showing all the PICT resources. Simply select the one that you want to open, and click the "OK" button. Please remember that the PICT resources found in some applications may be copyrighted.
Moving to the trash (new in version 2.5)
Select the "Move To Trash" command to move the current file to the trash. Please note that this command is not available if there is no file associated with the picture (for example, if the picture has been pasted from the clipboard).
Copy As HTML (new in version 2.5)
This command (located in the "Edit" menu) will copy the HTML code to display the current picture to the clipboard.
The new effects in the "Transform" menu (new in version 2.6)
The Transform menu allows you to perform some graphic operations on the displayed picture. Please note that this requires a lot of memory - you may need to give more memory to the application from the Finder if you want to open large pictures.
Renaming files (new in version 2.7)
The "Rename..." command from the "File" menu allows you to rename the file associated with the current picture. Please observe the standard Mac file names conventions: max length is 31 characters, and you can't use the ":" character.
Reverting to saved (new in version 2.7)
This command (in the "File" menu) discards all the changes made to the current picture (using the "Transform" menu). Please remember that this command works only if the current picture is associated with a file.
Distribution
PicPops can be freely distributed, as long as the whole package is included, and no modification has been made to it.
